Listen, I’ve lost more parsnips to crows than I care to admit. My first spring in Stardew Valley, I thought I was sitting pretty—until a flock of feathered bandits swooped in and helped themselves to my crops. I tried chasing them off myself, but I’m only one farmer, and I can’t be everywhere at once. That’s when I learned the golden rule of Pelican Town: if you want to keep your harvest, you’d better make friends with scarecrows. Even in 2026, with all the quality-of-life tweaks and farm toys we’ve got now, that rule hasn’t changed one bit. A scarecrow still protects a 17-by-17 circle around itself, and that tidy little safety bubble is the difference between a bumper crop and a bird buffet.

The Starter Scarecrow Is Cheap as Chips
The basic scarecrow is no spring chicken, but it gets the job done. It looks like a classic overalls-and-wide-brim-hat farmer, with hay poking out of its sleeves, and it does the job just as well as the fancy rarecrows. Looks don’t change the crow-scaring radius, though one rarecrow does have a fun extra trick. Crafting the basic scarecrow is a piece of cake once you reach Farming level 1. It takes 50
Wood, 20
Fiber, and 1
Coal. All three are easy to get, so I plopped one down next to my first cauliflower patch and breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was insurance.
My Rarecrow Hit List
There are 10 scarecrows in total if you count the basic design, and the other nine are rarecrows. Rarecrows don’t have names, so I call them by their numbers. I made it my mission to collect all nine, partly because they’re useful decor and partly because I’m a completionist with a crow problem. Here’s my field guide, based on plenty of trial, error, and one very unlucky casino session.
| Rarecrow | Look | Where and How | Price | My Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #5 | Purple shirt, teal overalls, long blond hair, little white gloves | Flower Dance on Spring 24, from Pierre’s market stand | 2,500g | Likely the first rarecrow you’ll meet; miss it and you wait a whole year |
| #4 | Jolly snowman with scarf and top hat | Festival of Ice on Winter 8, or random Traveling Cart stock | 5,000g at festival, 4,000g at cart | Does not melt, thankfully; the cart is the budget-friendly option |
| #2 | Green-skinned witch in a black dress and pointy hat | Spirit’s Eve on Fall 27 | 5,000g | Perfect fall vibes; a bit spooky for spring |
| #1 | Turnip Head-inspired design with button eyes, black hat, long coat, purple bowtie | Stardew Valley Fair on Fall 16 | 800 tokens | Fishing minigame is the quickest token grind; missing tokens can be bought for 50g each from the Token Seller |
| #3 | Alien with a large green head, black eyes, gray jumpsuit | Casino after completing The Mysterious Qi quest | 10,000 Qi coins | The only scarecrow that can wear hats, so naturally I gave it a cowboy hat |
| #6 | Tiny dwarf with blue shirt, red suspenders, green shoes, glowing red eyes under a Dwarvish Helm | Dwarf’s shop | 2,500g | Cheap but tricky; clear the rock with a Steel Pickaxe or Cherry Bomb, then find all four Dwarvish Scrolls |
| #7 | Raccoon balanced on its long striped tail | Donate 20 artifacts to the museum, then buy from the Night Market’s Magic Shop Boat | 5,000g | Cute enough to be a plush toy, but still scares crows |
| #8 | Tiki-mask and pineapple hybrid with a wide body | Donate 40 artifacts to the museum, then buy at the Winter Night Market | 5,000g | A long grind, but a great conversation piece |
| #9 | Dapper purple outfit with a fancy feathered purple hat | Collect all other rarecrows, then craft from the recipe sent to your mailbox | 50 Wood, 40 Fiber, 1 Iridium Ore | Double the range of other scarecrows, making it the best of the bunch |
The Ones That Cost an Arm and a Leg
Rarecrow #1 is a fan favorite for good reason. It looks like Turnip Head from Howl’s Moving Castle, and I half expect it to hop away every time I walk past. But it costs 800 tokens at the Stardew Valley Fair, not gold. I hit the fishing minigame like it was my job, and when I came up short, I bought the missing tokens for 50g each. No shame in that game.
Rarecrow #3 is the alien, and it’s the one that made me feel like I’d hit the jackpot. It costs 10,000 Qi coins at the casino, which only unlocks after The Mysterious Qi quest. I waited for a lucky day, ate a lucky meal, and parked myself at the Blackjack table. The slots are a long shot, but Blackjack treated me better. The payoff? This is the only scarecrow in Stardew Valley that can wear hats. Mine is currently rocking a cowboy hat, and yes, it’s as ridiculous as it sounds.

Rarecrow #6 is the dwarf, and it’s a classic case of cheap but not easy. It only costs 2,500g, but you need to clear the rock blocking the Dwarf’s shop with a Steel Pickaxe or Cherry Bomb, and then find all four Dwarvish Scrolls. I found mine in the mines and Skull Cavern, and I may have yelled at a few monsters along the way. Worth it? Absolutely. The glowing red eyes under that Dwarvish Helm are delightfully weird.
The Museum Grind and the Final Flex
Rarecrows #7 and #8 are the museum grind. #7, the raccoon, unlocks after donating 20 artifacts, and then you can buy it from the Night Market’s Magic Shop Boat for 5,000g. #8, the tiki-pineapple hybrid, requires 40 artifacts, which is nearly the whole collection. I spent more time digging up dirt spots and fishing for treasure chests than I’d like to admit. RNGesus was not always on my side, but the Winter Night Market eventually handed over the goods for 5,000g.

And then there’s rarecrow #9, the dapper purple one. Once you’ve collected all the other rarecrows, a crafting recipe arrives in your mailbox. Even then, you still need 50 Wood, 40 Fiber, and 1 Iridium Ore. Iridium Ore is one of the rarest resources in the game, so this is no small ask. But here’s the kicker: rarecrow #9 has double the range of all other scarecrows. That makes it the most useful and rarest rarecrow in Stardew Valley. I placed mine right in the middle of my biggest field, and now it watches over crops like a tiny purple landlord.
My Final Take
So that’s my scarecrow saga. I started with one basic scarecrow and a crow problem, and I ended with a farm full of weird little guardians. If you’re starting a farm in 2026, don’t sleep on scarecrows. They’re cheap insurance, they’re charming, and some of them are genuinely tough to get. My crops are safe, my crows are furious, and my farm looks like a slightly haunted museum. I wouldn’t have it any other way. 🐦⬛🌾
